I like design contests. I never win, but it’s fun to have a specific goal to work toward to, even if it goes unrewarded. (Never thought I’d say that.)

Guild wars 2 is an online video game. You pick a gender, a race, a profession, a background and you create your character from there.

Depending on your profession you get to wield specific weapons and tools (a sword, a dagger, a shield, a focus, a torch, a warhorn…the list goes on).

The contest was simple: create a new weapon for the game. Download the template for the weapon you wish to create and stick to its outlines. Besides that, the canvas is yours.

I decided to design a shield, which surprised even me. I’ve never been a fan of shields, of overly heavy, bulky gear, but I had such a good idea for a shield, that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

I wanted to make a ghostly shield, based on the lore of a certain part of the game. A blueish aura would coat the shield, and when an action was performed by the wielder, it would flare up with a ghostly aura (see the image below)

The shield went unrecognized. I didn’t win, I don’t even know if the dev. team saw it (I like to think they did). Regardless, this was a lot of fun to do, so I’m not too bummed out about it.

‘Til next time.
