I practice karate. Have been doing so for some ten years now.

I quickly found out that I joined a rather prestegious dojo. Every year we host what is called the ‘Yokoso Dutch Open’, at this point among the top 3 of biggest martial arts tournaments in Europe.

Completely out of the blue I once made a mock design, just for fun, and my sensei told me “this is great, we need this!”

Next thing I know I was designated commander-in-chief for the design department of our dojo. Population: 1

The challenge here (and one I would face the following years as well) was that there was no room for a budget, so using stock photography to make something nice was a no go (unless I could find free stock photos)

As such the biggest challenge of making a nice poster was to work with the native functions of Photoshop as much as possible, making it so I would not need a lot of photos.

This was the very first poster I designed for the YDO.

‘Til next time.
