In the novel I’m writing is a location, Khyriel. More specifically it’s the mountains of Khyriel, as the whole place is a harsh, blizzard-ridden mountain range.

Quite some time ago I made an impression for myself, to figure out how the place would look. At the time I was happy with it, and it served its purpose just fine.
Looking back at it, however, I felt I wanted to do a better job of creating scale and scope.

Starting from scratch I wanted to have a lot of snowy peaks to give an impression of the size of the place. I also wanted to do a better job of ‘snow on rock’. My initial version had no actual mountains in them, as I had delved them all under snow. Looking at reference pictures, however, snowy mountains still have plenty of rock showing from underneath their white blanket.

Playing around with dreary “this weather sucks” -lighting, I ended up improving this piece by quite a bit. The last part was to add some placeholder characters and make them very small, so I could further emphasize the scope of the region.
Have a look at the gallery.

‘Til next time.
